With the new gasoline engine and partially spontaneous ignition the Japanese sedan drives with pleasure, even if the 179 hp does not paw much.
Mazda 3 2.0 Skyactiv-X M Hybrid Exclusive
In addition to the 116 horsepower 1.8 diesel and the 122 hp 2.0 petrol, the Mazda 3 mid-size sedan is now also available with the innovative Skyactiv-X engine. Derived (at a distance) from 2.0, it is characterized by ignition by compression controlled by spark plug, which allows to lower consumption and polluting emissions. This four-cylinder works with a “lean” mixture, that is with a lot of air and little gasoline, and has a high compression ratio (16.3: 1, against the 10: 1 typical of petrol engines) as in diesel engines: this feature increases the pressure and temperature in the cylinders, up to the threshold of self-combustion. To activate it, a small amount of extra gasoline is injected, close to the spark plug: the small “fireball” that is created triggers the self-ignition of the rest of the mixture in the combustion chamber, in a manner similar to that of diesel. To obtain the “lean” mixture, a compressor (connected with a belt to the crankshaft) comes to the aid, which pumps air into the cylinders. However, in “extreme” and infrequent conditions (for example, when the engine is running at very high speeds) combustion returns to “normal”: that is, it occurs only through the action of the spark plug. Furthermore, the 2.0 Skyactiv-X is combined with a small 7.9 hp electric unit: it accelerates and makes the car a “light” hybrid.
More elegant than airy
Outside, the SkyActiv-X is identical to the other Mazda 3. It has sleek lines and a strong personality, with the long and flat front bonnet opposite the short and rounded back (with massive uprights, which limit visibility). The interior of the, Mazda 3 competitors, is confirmed to be elegant and well finished, with soft materials to the touch (the faux leather band running across the dashboard has been successful). The dashboard has a sinuous shape and the controls are well arranged. The multimedia system, with 8.8 “screen (not” touch “), Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, is operated with the wheel in the tunnel. The low driving position has precise electrical adjustments and a cozy seat. The instrumentation is clear, with the digital speedometer in the center. For those sitting in front, the space is not lacking, while behind the ease is not much and the small windows make the interior not very bright. The trunk has a discreet accessibility and a capacity of 358 liters with a sofa up: not much.
Likes but does not scratch
The driving of the, Gray Mazda 3, 2.0-X M Hybrid is pleasant and retains the qualities of the other versions: the solid suspension (not the maximum on the holes) give a remarkable agility, the steering is precise and the gearbox has an excellent maneuverability. From the 179 hp of the engine, however, do not expect a particularly incisive response: thanks to the long gear ratios, the thrust becomes consistent only after exceeding 4000 rpm, when the four cylinders also show a certain roughness. More than anything else, this unit responds smoothly and guarantees smooth gaits. As for consumption, the peculiarity of the engine requires thorough checks, which we will carry out shortly during a road test. For now, we can say that, at the end of the test conducted mostly on extra-urban roads alternating a brilliant guide with a relaxed one, the on-board computer has calculated about 15 km / l.

The Mazda 3 2.0-XM Hybrid is already on sale with prices starting at $27,800 for the Executive, which already includes a rich standard equipment with full led headlights, head-up display, navigator, blind spot mirror monitoring and rear distance sensors. The richer Exclusive ($ 30,800) adds electrically adjustable and heated seats, in addition to the rear view camera. And, for 2,300 $ more, there is also four-wheel drive.
